Sustainable Energy Europe Award 2015

Three energy efficiency and renewable energy projects from Austria, Spain and the UK have won the prestigious EU Sustainable Energy Europe Awards for their innovative, consumer-empowering ideas. The winners were selected by a high level jury out of nine nominees – three from each of the three categories - chosen from a record 373 submissions.

Speaking at the award ceremony on 16th June 2015, Miguel Arias Cañete, European Commissioner for climate action and energy, said that the winners were chosen because they represent unique ideas which put the consumer at the centre of the energy system – in line with the EU's plans for Energy Union.

"Today's consumers are not passive. They care about what they buy – they want to know where it comes from, what it's made of, who made it, and whether it's good for them and good for the planet. The energy consumer is as active as the high street shopper checking the product label or 'best before' date. We need to support them to make sustainable choices," he said.

The 2015 Sustainable Energy Europe Award winners are…

Winner in the category "Energy Efficiency" is our smartphone app ecoGator, implemented within the myEcoNavigator campaign, building on the EU's energy efficiency labels.

Another winner (category "Cities, communities and regions") is Desendolla't: Catalan project shows how intelligent use of energy helps schools save money for education.

Winner in the category "Renewable energy" is the Co-operative Energy's User Chooser project: UK co-operative establishes a model for citizen-centred energy supply.

“All of the nominations are unique,” said Mr Cañete, “But one thing they have in common is that they put the consumer at the centre of the energy system." Consumers care about what they buy and we need to support them to make sustainable choices. The Energy Union is really a “citizens Energy Union”, he added.

In fact, the Energy Union should go hand in hand with a Digital Union, suggested MEP Jerzy Buzek, Chair of the European Parliament’s Industry Committee and projects like ecoGator exemplify that.
